Operation Identification

Burglars don't want to handle marked property. They cannot sell marked items to a "fence" as easily as they can sell unmarked articles. If they are stopped by the police, marked property provides corroborative evidence of their crimes. One of the most effective ways to prevent burglary is to first mark items that might be stolen and then tell the would-be-burglar that you have done so. This is accomplished by engraving an identifying mark such as your social insurance number or Driver's Licence number on property burglars frequently steal (television sets, radios, stereos, typewriters, cameras, bicycles, etc.) Then, a decal is placed on the window or door to warn intruders that you property has been marked. Update by marking newly purchased items.

Use of the Electric Engraver

1. You may borrow an electric engraver FREE from the London Police Service Community Services Unit.
    
2. You may wish to purchase an electric engraver -- they are available at most hardware stores and are inexpensive.
    
3. About 80% of the stolen property that is recovered by the police cannot be identified and returned to the owners and must be sold at public auction. To help the police protect your property and to prevent burglary, it is recommended that you use the form on hand, to list the serial numbers of your property and, further, that you use an electric engraver to mark your property. Engrave the identification number inside rather than on the back or any other easily removed part, and if you are able, mark each item twice, once in an obvious location -- and again in a less obvious location.
    
4. Place decals on windows at the front and the back of the house. These decals are a proven deterrent to burglary. Urge your neighbours to mark their property, too. The more homes involved, the safer the neighbourhood becomes.
