13 March 2014, a class of 21 police officers started the arduous task
of learning a new language, Chinese (Mandarin). The SAPS was
represented by police officers from Sandton, Bedfordview, Hawks and
Organised Crime.
The dedication of the police officers involved was admirable, as even when they were on leave members were concerted in their efforts to still attend.
Upon completion of these lessons, the students had to be able to pass a written as well as oral exam, and then only could they be awarded their certificates.
It was announced at this ceremony that Constable David Mothapo, of Sandton SAPS, was the best student, and would be sent to Beijing Foreign Studies University for a period of one year.
Constable David Mothapo had this to say:
“I am very humble for this opportunity being presented to me! I am proud of my colleagues who walked this way with me, without them I would never have excelled. I would like to thank all role players, both South African and Chinese, who had the faith in me to offer me this very special opportunity. I will embrace this experience, and represent my country to the best of my abilities.”
Gen Pharasi attended the function, and he had a special word of thanks to the Chinese role players, who funded this initiative, The Chinese CPF, South Africa – China Economic Association, Police Liaison Office of the Chinese Embassy and the Chinese Community and Police Co-Operation Center.
